Man Power Drugs Dangerous to Kidney, Liver, Heart – Expert warns
By Najeeb Sani
A medical expert, Dr Maryam Ahmed Almustapha, has warned Nigerians against the indiscriminate use of “man power” drugs and herbal sex enhancers, saying they pose serious risks to the kidney, liver, and heart.
Dr Almustapha in a chat with our correspondent said many of the commonly sold sexual performance drugs and herbs work by forcing the arteries to dilate, “which can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure”.
According to her, the sudden fall in blood pressure can lead to fainting, and in severe cases, trigger a heart attack.
“Most of the men power drugs and herbs open the arteries and cause blood pressure to go extremely low to cause fainting and heart attack. They also increase heart rates”, she revealed.
The medical expert further explained that because most herbal preparations are not standardised, users have no control over dosage, making them even more dangerous.
“The problem with most of the herbs is that they don’t come in doses as such, so you don’t have control on the dose,” she noted.
She added that the drugs can also cause severe headaches because the veins in the brain dilate when the substances are taken.
The physician specifically cautioned patients already managing chronic conditions.
“If you are taking hypertension drugs or you have kidney problems, you should avoid any sex enhancement drug,” she advised.
Dr. Almustapha urged men experiencing sexual health challenges to seek medical attention rather than self-medicate with unregulated drugs and herbs, stressing that proper diagnosis and treatment under a doctor’s supervision is safer.
