JUST IN: Eguavoen Appointed Interim Super Falcons Coach

By Al-Amin Ciroma

Augustine Eguavoen has been handed the temporary responsibility of guiding Nigeria’s Super Falcons as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the women’s football event at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Eguavoen, a former Super Eagles head coach, will lead the Falcons in their two-legged second-round qualifying clash against Comoros in October.

Our correspondent reports that the Nigeria Football Federation has also assembled an experienced technical team around him, with Nasarawa Amazons coach Christopher Danjuma serving as an assistant. Former Super Falcons defender Ayisat Yusuf and ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa are also expected to be part of the coaching setup.

Nigeria will face Comoros on October 9 in the first leg before playing the return fixture four days later on October 13. Both matches are scheduled for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo.

THE NATIONAL LENS gathered that the Super Falcons earned a bye into the second round because of their position among the highest-ranked teams in the qualifying competition. Comoros, meanwhile, booked its place after recording a commanding 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan.

The Olympic qualification route will be demanding, with Nigeria needing to negotiate four rounds of two-legged knockout matches to claim one of Africa’s two available places at the tournament.

Victory over Comoros would send the Falcons into the third round, where they could face either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco in early 2027.

The appointment also represents a new chapter in Eguavoen’s coaching career. Despite his extensive experience with Nigerian football, including his previous stint with the Super Eagles, this will be his first assignment managing a women’s national team.

With the Olympic qualification campaign carrying significant stakes, Eguavoen will be expected to quickly blend his experience with the strength and quality already available within the Super Falcons setup.
