Kylian Mbappé moved into joint fifth place on the all-time UEFA Champions League scoring chart after helping Real Madrid defeat Inter Milan 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The France captain opened the scoring in the 14th minute, taking his Champions League tally to 71 goals and drawing level with Real Madrid legend Raúl González. Mbappé reached the milestone in just 99 appearances, compared with Raúl’s 142 games.
Federico Valverde doubled Madrid’s advantage nine minutes later after Inter goalkeeper Josep Martínez was caught in possession following a defensive mistake.
Inter, despite enjoying the greater share of possession and creating several opportunities, pulled one back through Carlos Augusto in the 77th minute. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois then produced several crucial saves to preserve the victory.
The result gives José Mourinho’s Real Madrid a winning start to their Champions League campaign, while Mbappé’s latest goal moves him within 19 goals of Karim Benzema’s 90-goal tally in the competition.
