NDC Rejects Claims of Missing Governorship Candidates in 12 States, Unveils Flagbearers
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has rejected reports that it failed to field governorship candidates in 12 states ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that it has candidates in all 28 states where governorship elections are scheduled to take place.
This newspaper gathered that the party described the reports as false and politically motivated, saying they were designed to create the impression that the emerging political platform lacks a nationwide structure.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC said it had completed the nomination of candidates across the 28 states participating in the 2027 governorship elections.
The party also dismissed suggestions that it was primarily a regional political organisation, insisting that it has structures, supporters and candidates across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
To counter the reports, the NDC released the names of its governorship candidates in the 12 states allegedly identified as having no candidates.
They include Senator Kabiru Marafa in Zamfara State, retired Rear Admiral Ibrahim Sanusi Kasim in Borno, Hon. John Odey in Cross River and Babanta Michael Okon in Akwa Ibom.
The party listed Nwofe Boniface as its candidate in Ebonyi, Yakubu Solomon Ndam in Plateau, Ilu-Barde Aliyu in Katsina and Alhaji Umar Usman Besse in Kebbi.
Others are Jonga Yahaya Gabakau in Yobe, Dutse Aminu Sani in Jigawa, Prof. Yahaya Mohammed Sani in Taraba and Abdu Sidi Bomi in Niger State.
The NDC urged journalists, bloggers and other media practitioners to verify political claims before publication, warning that the spread of unverified information could damage public confidence in both the media and the electoral process.
The party said it would remain focused on issue-based politics and its campaign agenda, which it said would prioritise security, job creation, accountability and national development.
