Balami Urges Tinubu to Ensure Rescue of Abducted Mussa, Lassa Children

By Atiku Galadima, Maiduguri

The member representing Askira/Uba and Hawul Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Midala Usman Balami, has called on the Federal Government and the Borno State Government to intensify efforts to rescue children abducted from Mussa and Lassa communities in the state.

Balami said the children had remained in captivity for more than 130 days, urging President Bola Tinubu to ensure their safe return to their families.

The lawmaker, according to our correspondent, made the call during a protest by parents and members of the affected communities over the continued captivity of the children.

He said he had raised the matter at the National Assembly and was continuing to follow up on efforts to secure the release of the victims.

Balami also disclosed that he organised a press conference about a week ago to draw attention to the plight of the abducted children and seek greater action from the authorities.

According to him, the children abducted from Mussa and Lassa had been in captivity for too long and required urgent intervention by the government.

“The children of Mussa and Lassa wards have suffered for too long. They should be rescued and brought back to their families safe,” he said.

The National Lens reports that Balami said 44 children were abducted from Mussa Ward, while 36 others were taken from Lassa. He also disclosed that 36 travellers were abducted along Buratai Road.

He called for closer coordination between the Federal and state governments in addressing the situation, stressing the need to prioritise the safety of the affected citizens.

Meanwhile, the parents of the abducted children have given the Federal Government six days to secure their release, threatening to stage a protest at the Presidential Villa in Abuja if the children are not rescued.

The chairman of the Mussa Parents of Abductees, Shuibu Umaru, expressed concern over the continued detention of the children and appealed to the Federal Government to intervene.

Umaru questioned why children abducted in Oyo State had been rescued while those from Mussa and Lassa remained in captivity.

“We too are Nigerians. We are citizens of this country. The President needs to do everything possible to rescue our children,” he told the Nigerian Tribune.

He said the parents would give the government six days to act before proceeding to Abuja to protest.

“We are giving you six days to rescue our children; otherwise, we will stage a big protest at the Presidential Villa gate in Abuja,” Umaru said.

He appealed to the President to intervene in the matter and ensure the safe return of the abducted children to their families.

“Let the government rescue our children. We want this message to reach the President. Bring back our children; we need our children,” he said.
