The Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a serving officer and a 13-year-old child in Taraba State.
The officer, identified as Captain Etim Essien, is currently serving at Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.
THE NATIONAL LENS reports that the allegation, which has circulated online, concerns a 13-year-old girl reportedly living with a disability who was allegedly subjected to repeated sexual abuse while in the care of the officer and his family.
The Taraba State Ministry of Women Affairs and Child Development, alongside the National Human Rights Commission in the state, are also said to be looking into the matter and have called for appropriate administrative and disciplinary action if the allegations are established.
Confirming the development, the Nigerian Army said it had commenced an investigation to determine the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegation.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olumide Olukoya, the Army said allegations involving sexual abuse, particularly those concerning minors and other vulnerable persons, are treated with the utmost seriousness.
The Army, however, cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed, stressing that the allegation remains under investigation and that it would be premature to determine the culpability of any individual.
The military also pledged to cooperate fully with relevant civilian authorities investigating the matter, saying the process would be conducted in accordance with existing laws and regulations.
According to the Army, any personnel found to have violated the law or military regulations would face appropriate disciplinary measures after the investigation.
The military urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could compromise the investigation or expose the identity and privacy of the alleged victim.
It further assured the public that updates would be provided when appropriate, subject to legal requirements and the integrity of the investigative process.
