Reminiscence: Gowon’s Son Ibrahim and the Sheikh Inyass Connection
By Aliyu Saleh
A remarkable photograph from 1975 captures former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, walking through a quite London street with his children, Ibrahim and Saratu, during his period of exile in Britain.
Away from the weight of political power and Nigeria’s turbulent history, the image offers a rare glimpse of Gowon in a quieter role, that of a father with his children.
What makes the photograph particularly memorable is the story behind his son Ibrahim’s name. Gowon named him after Sheikh Ibrahim Niass (Inyass), a revered Islamic scholar whom he deeply admired. The name therefore carries a personal connection to a figure who left a lasting impression on the former Nigerian leader.
Taken on October 25, 1975, the photograph preserves more than a family moment in London. It quietly brings together Nigeria’s political history and its rich religious heritage, while reminding us that behind the titles and historic events are personal relationships and memories that can endure for generations.
