Desert Journey Ends in Tragedy as Six Migrants Die Stranded in Libya
By Shafii Haruna
Six migrants have died after being stranded in the vast Libyan desert when the vehicle transporting them broke down, in another grim reminder of the dangers facing people attempting to cross the country through remote migration routes.
The bodies were recovered in southeastern Libya, around 200 kilometres northwest of Jalu, according to Libyan security authorities.
THE NATIONAL LENS reports that officials said two of the victims were found inside the disabled vehicle, while three others were discovered about four kilometres away. The sixth body was located roughly 10 kilometres from the vehicle after security personnel followed footprints leading into the desert.
Nineteen other migrants connected to the same journey were rescued on Sunday, although authorities did not immediately provide details about the exact location where they were found.
Information recovered from the vehicle indicated that its owner was from Chad. According to the brother of the vehicle owner, who was among those rescued, another vehicle travelling with the group reportedly took fuel from the stranded vehicle before continuing its journey.
The development highlights the extreme risks associated with desert crossings in Libya, where migrants can travel for long distances through isolated terrain with limited access to water, fuel, communication or emergency assistance.
Libya remains a major transit route for migrants and asylum seekers seeking to move towards Europe. Many undertake hazardous journeys across the Sahara before attempting the equally dangerous Mediterranean crossing.
The latest deaths also underline how quickly a mechanical failure can become a life-threatening emergency in the desert, where those left behind may have little chance of reaching help.
Libyan security personnel, supported by members of the Fifth Battalion of the 129th Brigade, were involved in recovering the bodies from the desert, according to authorities.
The incident adds to a wider pattern of migrant deaths along Libya's desert and coastal routes. Human rights monitors have documented repeated discoveries of migrant bodies in different parts of the country, reflecting the continuing dangers associated with irregular migration through Libya.
For the survivors, rescue came before the journey could claim more lives. But for the six who did not make it, the desert became the final destination of a journey that had begun with the hope of reaching somewhere safer.
